Founded by Dr. Richard Cape in 1993, the practice specializes exclusively in eye health, offering comprehensive services including cataract surgery, diabetic eye care, glaucoma treatment, corneal transplants, laser surgery, dry eye treatment, and routine eye exams.
With state-of-the-art technology and an on-site ambulatory surgery center dedicated solely to ophthalmology, patients receive specialized care without the need to travel to larger cities. The practice also offers 24-hour emergency eye care, ensuring patients have access to urgent treatment when it matters most.
Continuing their commitment to innovation, Cape Regional Eye Center now offers the Valeda® Light Delivery System for dry macular degeneration, an advanced light therapy treatment that has shown significant results, with approximately 90% of patients experiencing 1–3 lines of improved vision at 20 months. They also provide the Light Adjustable Lens™ for cataract surgery, a cutting-edge technology that allows the lens power to be customized after surgery using specialized light treatments. This advancement enables highly precise visual outcomes, with many patients achieving excellent distance and near vision and reduced dependence on glasses.
Dr. Cape has been a trusted leader in ophthalmology in West Tennessee for decades, performing the first corneal transplant in the Dyersburg area and pioneering advanced surgical procedures locally. Known for professionalism, compassion, and individualized care, Dr. Cape and Dr. Courtney Cape Irvin work alongside a dedicated team focused on long-term vision health and exceptional surgical results.
From preventative eye exams to advanced surgical procedures, Cape Regional Eye Center remains committed to helping patients see clearly and confidently, right here at home.

I want to share my experience at Cape Surgery Center….
I have been a patient at Dr. Cape’s for several years and i hold him and his staff in the highest regard. I have an insight that most people don’t have as I also work at Cape Surgery Center. I have seen him day in and day out treat his patients and staff with the utmost of respect and compassion. I have seen grown men weep in recovery as they “see” things that they haven’t been able to see in years. I see how meticulous he is and the way our staff goes above and beyond to make every outcome a success.
I tell people all the time that “yes, he is an amazing doctor but more importantly….he is a good, kind man”. I don’t think those two traits always go hand in hand. I am thankful for all he does and continues to do for our community. I worked for a not for profit for many years (in my previous life) and I know what a servant leader is and Dr. Cape humbly fits the criteria.
I love that people drive from all over to our small town to see us! It just makes me smile to see Shelby and Madison County and out of state tags in our parking lot. Yea, that’s right…it’s worth the drive!
